GENESIS 35                  JACOB’S RETURN TO BETHE L


1.   What instructions did God give to Jacob? (Gen.  35:1) 

      Ans:   "Arise, go up to Bethel and …..; and make an altar there to God, …..."


2.   What is the significance of Bethel? (Gen. 28: 10-22)

      Ans:  Bethel, “House of God”, the place of “Jacob’s ladder”, God promised to        be with him.


3.   What did Jacob tell his family? (Gen. 35: 2-4)?

     Ans:  "Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and        change your garments, arise and go up to Bethel.


4.   Jacob told to his people, “Put away the foreign gods” then what they have done? (Gen.35:2) 

       Ans:  They gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and            the earrings which were in their ears.


5.   What did Jacob do with the idols and earrings? (Gen.  35:4)

      Ans:  “…. Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.


6.   What he determined to do at Bethel? (Gen.35:3) 

      Ans:  Make an altar there to God…"


7.   When Jacob and his family journeyed to Bethel, the inhabitants did not bother him why? (Gen.  35:5-6)                                                                                                                                                                                         Ans:  The terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and             they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.


8.   Who was Deborah?  And what happened to her (Gen.35:8)

        Ans:  Rebekah's nurse and she died.


9.   Again God appeared to Jacob, What did God do at Bethel this time? (Gen. 35: 9-10)                                                                                                        

        Ans:  God blessed him and changed his name- Jacob to Israel.


10.        What the Lord God said to him? (Gen. 35:11,12) 

            Ans:  “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a                          company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from                  your body. 12 The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you;                    and to your descendants after you I give this land.”


11. What did Jacob do in response to God? (Gen. 35: 14, 15).    

         Ans:  Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, And                    Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.


12.        At Bethlehem, what happened to Rachel? (Gen. 35:16-19)  

           Ans:  Rachel gave birth to Benjamin, she died, and she was buried on the               way to Ephrath (Bethlehem).


13.         What is the meaning of name ‘Benjamin’?                                 

              Ans:  “Son of the Right Hand”


14.        What sin did Reuben commit?  (Gen. 35:22)

             Ans: Reuben laid with Bilhah his father's concubine.


15.        By doing this, how Ruben suffered? (Gen. 49: 3-4)

           Ans:  He forfeited his blessing as the oldest son.


16.         How many sons Jacob had? & How they are known (Gen. 35:23-26)                

            Ans:  Twelve sons and they are known as the heads of the 12 tribes of                      Israel.


17.        Name the sons of Leah? (v.23)

           Ans:  Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and                    Zebulun.


18.        Name the sons of Rachel (v.24)

            Ans:  Joseph and Benjamin.


19.         Name the sons of Bilhah (v25)  

            Ans:  Rachel's maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali.


20.        Name the sons of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant (v.26)

           Ans:  Gad and Asher.

21.        How old was Isaac when he died? (Genesis 35:28-29) 

          Ans: 178 years
