GENESIS 32 JACOB WRESTLES WITH GOD AND MAN (The origin of Israel)
1. Whom did Jacob meet when he went his
way?(Gen. 32: 1)
Ans: He met the angels of the Lord.
2. Jacob saw the ‘God’s host’. What did
he call the place? (Gen. 32:2)
Ans: Mahanaim.
3. Why Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed and whom he was afraid?
Ans: Jacob was afraid of his own brother, Esau, whom he had twice cheated 20 years before.
4. How many men were coming with Esau? (Gen.
32:6)
Ans: Four hundred men.
5. What was Jacob’s reasoning for
separating into two bands? (Gen. 32:8)
Ans: He was afraid of Esau. In case he smote the one company, the other could escape.

Ans: Eleven.

alone? (Gen. 32:24-26)
Ans: “a man”
8. How long did Jacob and the ‘man’

Ans: There wrestled a ‘man’ with him until the breaking of the day.
9. “A man wrestled with him.” Who does
Jacob wrestle with?
Ans: That “man” is God himself.
10. How we know that man is God himself?
Ans: Because Jacob is given a new name, “Israel” which means “he fights with God.”
11. What was the significance of his old
name? What was the significance of his new name? (Gen. 32: 27-28)
Ans: Jacob meaning 'he who supplants', but Israel meaning 'he who struggles with God'
12. Give the name of great men of the
Bible whom God gave a new name?
Ans: (a) Abram is renamed Abraham ("father of nations," 17:5)
(b) Sarai is renamed Sarah ("princess," 17:15)
(c) Jacob is renamed as Israel (he struggle with God” 32:27-28)
(d) Simon is renamed Peter ("rock," Matthew 16:16-18).
13. What part of Jacob’s body was out of
joint as they wrestled? (Gen. 32:25)
Ans: The hollow of his thigh.
14. What did Jacob request of the angel

Ans: He would not let the ‘man’ go until he blessed him.

why? (Gen. 32:28)
Ans:
Israel, because as a prince hast thou power
with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

Peniel.

Because God touched the hollow of Jacob’s
thigh in the sinew that shrank. [As a perpetual reminder of this fateful
encounter with God of Israel]
