GENESIS 16                                                     ABRAM, SARAI, HAGAR & ISHMAEL

1.Who was Hagar?
Ans:  Hagar was Sarah’s Egyptian maidservant; later, Abraham’s concubine and            the mother of Ishmael.

2.“Abram’s wife, Sarai bore him no children”What did Sarai suggest to him? (16:1-3)
Ans:  Sarai suggests that Abram take her maidservant, Hagar the Egyptian, and seek to have a son by her.

3.How did Abram respond?  (Gen 16:2-4)
Ans:  Abram heeded to the voice of Sarai. He slept with Hagar and she conceived and bore a child.

4.What was Hagar’s attitude toward Sarai after she conceived? (Gen. 16: 4-5)
Ans:     When Hagar realized that she was pregnant, her mistress became                   despised in her eyes.

5.What did Sarai do to Hagar?  and what Hagar did?  (Gen.16: 6)
Ans:  Sarai treated Hagar harshly, so still she carrying Abram’s child,                                       she fled from Sarai’s presence.

6.What was the name of the well at which Hagar met the Lord?
Ans:  Beer-lahai-roi.

7.What does that name mean?
Ans:  “the well of the visible God”

8.Who heard Hagar’s affliction and comes to help her? (Gen. 16:7)
Ans:  Then the Angel of Jehovah.

9.What questions did the Lord ask of Hagar? (Gen. 16: 8)
Ans:  “Hagar, Sarai’s maidservant, from where have you come?                                                And where are you going”?

10.  What she responded (16:7-12)
Ans:  She said, I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.

11.  What instruction did the angel of the Lord give to Hagar? (Gen. 16: 9)
Ans: The angels of Jehovah said to her, Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her. (10) The angel added, I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count.  (11) Furthermore the angel of Jehovah said to her, you are pregnant. You shall give birth to a son.

12.  What was Hagar told to name her son?
Ans:   Ishmael.

13.  What more the Angel told about her son? (16:11, 12).
Ans:  He shall be like a wild donkey among men. His hand shall be against every one, and every one’s hand against him; and he shall live in hostility against all his brothers”.

14.  Who is “the angel of the Lord” that appeared to Hagar?
Ans:   The angel of the Lord is a theophany, an appearance of God in physical form. It can be the manifestations of Jesus before His incarnation.

15.  What is a covenant?
Ans:  A covenant is an unchangeable, divinely imposed legal agreement between God and man that stipulates the conditions of their relationship” (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology p.515).

16.  What is Hagaric covenant?   (Gen. 16:7-14)
Ans: This was a covenant made with Hagar concerning her seed through Ishmael, Abraham’s son.

17.  What is its importance? (Gen. 16:12)
Ans:  Ishmael to be blessed and become a great nation. His hand to be against every man

18.  What was the name of the son born to Abram and Hagar? (Gen. 16:16).
Ans:  Ishmael

19.  What is the meaning of the name Ishmael? (Gen. 16:11).
Ans:  “The Lord will hear”

20.    How old was Abram when Ishmael was born? (Gen. 16:16) 

Ans:  He was 86 years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abraham.


21.  Mention the names of persons named before their birth?
Ans:  (1) Ishmael (Gen. 16:11), (2) Isaac (Gen. 17:19), (3) Solomon (1 Chr. 22:9), (4) Josiah (1 Ki. 13:2), (5) Cyrus (Isa. 44), (6) John the Baptist (Lk. 1:13), (7) Jesus (Lk. 1:21).
