GENESIS 40       JOSEPH ,  THE DREAMS OF CUP-BEARER AND THE BAKER



1.     To what prison did Potiphar send Joseph and what was Potiphar's connection to this prison? (Gen. 40: 3)

Ans: Joseph's master sent him to the prison that housed the king's prisoners over which he had jurisdiction.


 2.    Who were put into prison along with Joseph? (Gen. 40: 1)

Ans: Butler (Chief cup-bearer) and baker (Superintendent) of the king of Egypt.

Ans: They offended the king of


 3.    Why did Pharaoh put his trusted butler and the baker in prison? (Gen. 40: 1-3) 

  Ans: Because they had offended their lord the king of Egypt.


 4.    At what place were the chief of the butlers and the chief of the bakers put “in ward”? (Gen. 40: 3)

Ans: In the house of the captain of the guard.


 5.    What did the butler dream? (Gen. 40: 9-11)

Ans: "Behold, in my dream a vine was before me, and in the vine were three branches; it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. Then Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand."


 6.    Who said to whom, and when, “Do not interpretations belong to God?”

Ans: Joseph said  to the cup-bearer and baker, when they had dreams while in prison.


 7.    What interpretation did Joseph give for the butler’s cup-bearer’ dream?

Ans: Joseph prophesied that he would be restored to his former position.


 8.    What did Joseph request of the butler? (gen. 40: 14-15)

Ans: Joseph requested the butler that to release him from his unjust imprisonment, when it will be well with the butler, and also please show kindness to him; make mention of him to Pharaoh, and get him out of the prison.


 9.    What did the baker dream? (Gen. 40: 16-17)

Ans: 16 When the chief baker said to Joseph, "I also was in my dream, and there were three white baskets on my head.17 In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head."


 10.What was the interpretation of the baker’s dream? (Gen. 40: 18-19)

Ans: So Joseph answered and said, "This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head from you and hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you.”


 11.What did the butler do when he was restored to his position? (Gen. 40:23)

Ans: Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
