GENESIS 22 THE GREAT TEST OF ABRAHAM
1. What did God ask Abraham to do with his beloved son, Isaac?
Ans: God told Abraham to offer his son, Isaac as a burnt offering.
2. God gave Abraham 3 commands. What were they? (Gen. 22:1,2).
Ans: Take your son, your only son, your beloved Isaac and go to the land of Moriah offer him as a burnt offering.
3. Why did Abraham offer his son Isaac?
Ans: He did so out of obedience--believing that God could raise him from the dead (Heb. 11:19).
4. Where Abraham was told to offer his son, Isaac as a sacrifice?
Ans: On Mount Moriah (v.2).
5. How did Abraham show his whole hearted willingness to obey God?
Ans: In obedience to God’s demand, Abraham got up early in the morning, cut wood for the offering, saddled his donkey, took with him two of his servants and Isaac his son and set out to the place of sacrifice, which God had told him. They traveled three days, placed the wood on Isaac’s back and carried the fire and knife himself; and the two of them went on together. When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son! (vs. 3-10).
6. In obedience to God’s demand, Abraham and Isaac make their way to the place of sacrifice, what confidence does Abraham express to his servants.
Ans: Abraham said to his servants, Stay here with the donkey, while me and the boy go over there; we will worship, and then we shall return to you. (v. 5)
7. Who carried the wood for the sacrifice to God? (Gen. 22:6).
Ans: Isaac.
8. For the sacrifice to God, what did Abraham carry? (Gen. 22:6)
Ans: Fire and knife.
9. What question did Isaac ask his father, Abraham?
Ans: "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” (Gen. 22:7)
10. How did Abraham respond to the question of his son Isaac?
Ans: Abraham gave the answer of great faith, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”(Gen. 22:8).
11. How the writer of the book of Hebrews clarified this answer?
Ans: The writer of Hebrews states that: “By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. ……” Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.” (Heb. 11:17-19)
12. In Isaiah 53 what vision God gave to the prophet?
Ans: God gave the prophet Isaiah a vision of one who would come. Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, who would set people free. (Isaiah 53:7)
13. How does God intervene?
Ans: The angel of the Lord calls from heaven - stops the act. He tells him “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him (v.12). God provided a ram instead.
14. Abraham passes the most intense test of faith, what does God say to him?
Ans: Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son…” (vs.11, 12)
15. Which animal for sacrifice did Abraham see caught by its horns in a thicket? (Gen. 22:13).
Ans: A ram.
16. In response to Abraham’s obedience to God, what blessings He gave.
Ans: God assured blessings Abraham , He would make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore and also assured that his descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies. (Gen. 22:17).
17. What did Abraham name the place on Mt. Moriah, where Isaac was almost sacrificed? (Gen. 22:13-14)
Ans: "Jehovah-jireh". “The Lord Will Provide”.
18. Where did Abraham travel after the sacrifice?
Ans: Abraham stayed in Beersheba” (Gen. 22:19)
19. Has Abraham has been tested before?
Ans: yes, back in chapter 12, God told Abram, “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you….”
