GENESIS 46 - JACOB’S JOURNEY TO EGYPT


1.       What did Israel take with him on his journey to Egypt? (Gen. 46: 1, 5-7)

Ans:  All his possessions and all his offspring.

2.       What did Israel do when he and his family arrived at Beer-Sheba?(Gen. 46: 1)

Ans: At Beersheba, they offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

3.       Earlier also who else worshiped the Lord at Beersheba?(Gen. 26: 23-25).

Ans: Abraham (Gen. 21: 33) and Isaac 

4.       How did God introduce himself? (Gen. 46: 3)

Ans:  "I am God, the God of your father;”

5.       What did God say to Israel in a vision? (Gen. 46: 3)

Ans:  (i) “Do not fear to go down to Egypt, (ii) I will make of you a great nation there”.

6.       What did God promise Israel? (Gen. 46: 4)

Ans:   (i) “I will go down with you to Egypt, (ii) I will also surely bring you up again;
(iii) Joseph will put his hand on your eyes."

7.       Who were the five sons of Judah? (Gen. 46: 12)

Ans: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah.

8.       What happened to Judah’s sons Era ns Onan? (Gen.46: 12)

Ans: Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

9.       Why the sons of Judah are of special note?

Ans:  Because his is the Messianic lineage. [Abraham to Isaac to Jacob to Judah to Perez to Hezron, Ref. Luke 3: 33-34].

10.   How many of Israel’s family went to Egypt (Gen. 46: 27)

Ans: seventy. [They were 66, plus Jacob himself, + Joseph, + his two sons].

11.   Who said to whom “Now let me die, since I have seen your face, because you are still alive.” (Gen. 46: 28-30)

Ans: During the emotional meeting between Joseph and his father, Israel said to Joseph.

12.   In what portion of Egypt did Jacob and his descendants settle? (Gen. 46: 34)

Ans: Goshen.

13.   Why was it important that they remained separate?

Ans: The Egyptians were agricultural in the sense of farming crops. They considered sheep unclean. The Israelites were shepherds and is an abomination to the Egyptians, so they remained separate.
