GENESIS 34 THE DINAH INCIDENT

GENESIS 34   THE DINAH INCIDENT

1.       Where did God command Jacob to return? (Gen. 28:21; 32:13)

Ans:   God commanded Jacob to arise,  get out of this land, and return to the land of his  family"

2.      Where did Jacob and his family settled?

Ans:  They settled in a town called Shechem.

3.      Name of the only daughter of Leah? (Gen. 34:1)

 Ans:  Dinah.

4.      Where did Dinah go? (Gen. 34:1)

Ans:  she went out to see the daughters of the land, i.e. the Canaanite.

5.      Who saw her there? (Gen. 34:2)

Ans:   Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her.

6.      What all threefold crime Shechem committed to Dinah?  (Gen. 34 :2)

Ans:  (a) He kidnapped her, (b) He lay with her, (c) “And he tormented her”.

7.      Who told to whom? "Get me this young woman as a wife."(Gen 34: 3, 4)?

Ans:  Shechem spoke to his father Hamor.

8.      What did Hamor, father of Shechem pleaded with Jacob? (Gen. 34: 8)

Ans:  Hamor pled with Jacob for Dinah to be his son's wife, [but he acknowledged no sin]

9.      What request and proposal did Shechem make to Dina’s father and brothers? (Gen. 34: 11-12)

Ans:  "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give. Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and …..; but give me the young woman as a wife."

10.  What was Jacob’s sons’ answer to Shechem and his father when he asked to marry Dinah? (Gen.34: 13-17)

Ans: 13 Reuben and Levi spoke deceitfully, And said, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us. Both the brothers deceived them into thinking that they would let their sister marry Shechem under the condition that every male in their town be circumcised. [Used “religion” as an excuse]

11.  How did Simeon and Levi broke the agreement? And what they have done to the men of the city? (Gen. 34: 24-26)

Ans: They slew all their males. [They even plundered the city, taking wives and children too].

12.  How did Jacob react to his sons for what they had done?  (Gen. 34 : 30)

Ans:  In disgust. In fear of Ham's descendants' retaliation. [30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have troubled me by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I."]

13.  How did they reply? (Gen 34:31)

Ans:   they said, "Should he treat our sister like a harlot?"

14.  What was later done to Simeon and Levi because of this (Gen.49:5-7)?

Ans:  Jacob passed over Simeon and Levi for their primary blessings, and passed it to Judah instead.

NOTE: In this chapter we do not see God’s name or His influence. God’s command was to return to Bethel (28:21; 31:3, 13), whereas Jacob and his family settled in Shechem. Intermingling means intermarriage which will lead to polluted “seed line”. The reason of their failures was disobedience.
