GENESIS 26 GOD’S PROMISE TO ISAAC

GENESIS 26            THE STORY OF  ISAAC





1.  What God told about five fold obedience to Abraham (Gen. 26:5).



Ans: God told that,
(i) Abraham  obeyed  My voice,
(ii)  did everything I required of him,
(iii) kept  My commands,
(iv) kept  My decrees and
(v) kept My instructions.”



2.  Give references of passages in Genesis where the promise is repeated?

Ans: Gen. 12:2,3,7; 13:15,17; 15:5-8,18-21; 18:18; 22:16-18; 24:7; 26:3,4,24; 28:3,4; 32:12.


3.  Where did Isaac dwell? (Gen. 26:6)


Ans: At Gerar.



4.  To avoid death, what falsehood did Isaac tell to the men of Gerar?  (26:6-11).
               

Ans:Isaac lied about  Rebekah, he said “She is my sister”.



5.  When the men of the place asked about his wife, why did Isaac lie about Rebekah? (Gen. 26:7)



Ans:  He said, She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “My wife,” thinking “The men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is beautiful”.



6. How did Abimelech learn that Rebekah was Isaac’s wife? (Gen. 26:8)


Ans:  Abimelech saw that  Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife.


7.  Which are the three parallel episodes in Genesis concern the peril of a bride of the Patriarchs Abraham and Isaac?



Ans:(i) Sarah's abduction by Pharaoh (Gen 12:10-20)

   (ii) Sarah's abduction by King Abimelech of Gerar (Gen 20:1-18)

   (iii) Rebekah's  abduction by King Abimelech (Gen 26:1, 7-17)



8.    What charge did Abimelech give his people? (Gen. 26:11)



Ans: "He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."



9.  How much of increase did Isaac receive from his farming? (Gen. 26:12)
                                       

Ans:  Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him.



10.      What had the Philistines done with the wells that Abraham had dug? (Gen. 26:15
                                                                                       
Ans:  The Philistines had stopped up all the wells which Abraham had dug, and they had filled them with earth.



11.     Why the Philistines envied him (Gen. 26:12-14)?



Ans: “….. For he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him” (v.14)


12.  What the Philistines did with  the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham?



Ans:  The Philistines stopped up by filling them with earth” (Gen.  26:15).


13.    Isaac dug three wells in the Valley of Gerar. Name them? (26: 18-22).



Ans: 1st well Esek, (because they contended with him v.20),                                                  
The 2nd well he called its name Sitnah. (They argued over that v.21),                                        
The 3rd well he called it Rehoboth. (“For now Yahweh has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land” v.22).



14.  From Gerar, Isaac went to what city? (Gen. 26:23)


Ans: Beersheba.


15. Isaac did three things at Beersheba besides pitching his tent. What were they? (Gen.26:25)                                                                                                 
Ans: Isaac built an altar there, and  called on the name of the Lord, he pitched his tent there; and there his  servants dug a well.

16.    What happened there at Beersheba?  (vv 23-25)



Ans: the same night Yahweh appeared to Isaac (v.24).



17.                   What He said?


Ans: Abrahamic covenant confirmed in Isaac and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.”


18.  What else do we know about the place Beersheba?


Ans: Hagar wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. (Gen. 21:14) 
Abimelech and Abrahammade  a treaty at Beer-Sheba (Gen. 21:31).
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-Sheba(Gen.21:33).Isaac and Abraham stayed in  Beersheba (Gen. 22: 19).


19.     The Lord appeared to Isaac at Beersheba. What he did there? (Gen.26:25).



Ans: He built an altar there, and called on the name of Yahweh, and pitched his tent there. There Isaac’s servants dug a well.



20.    Who desired to make a pact with Isaac? (Gen. 26:.26).

Ans:  King Abimelech,  his friend Ahuzzath, and the commander of his army,  Phichol.

21.   What, they  testified about Isaac. (26:23-31)



Ans: They said, "We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you (v.28).



22.   Why was Beersheba given that name? (Gen. 26:33).


Ans: Isaac’s servants …,  said to him, “We have found water.”  So he called it Shebah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba.



23.  How long Isaac lived? (Gen. 35: 28)

Ans: Isaac lived for 180 years.
