GENESIS 33      JACOB’S PEACE WITH ESAU



1.      What did Jacob do when he saw Esau coming to meet him? (Gen. 33:1-3)                  

Ans:  He divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and his two servant wives. ..“

2.      What order did Jacob place the mothers and children? (Gen. 33:2)                                  

Ans:  The handmaids and their children foremost, Leah and her children, Rachel and Joseph hindmost.

3.      How Esau received Jacob? (Gen.  33:4)                                                                                   

Ans:  “Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck, kissed him as he wept”.


4.      What was Jacob’s answer when Esau asked him, “Who are these people?” (Gen.33:5-7)                                                                                                             Ans:  Jacob said, “They are the children whom God has graciously given your servant”.


5.      What is Esau's response to Jacobs’s gift? (Gen. 33:9)


 Ans:  “……., Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.”


6.       Who said to whom, “…..because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.”  (Gen. 33: 10, 11) 

Ans:  Jacob said to Esau.


7.      Why does Jacob say Esau should keep the gift? (Gen. 33: 10)                                         

Ans:  “I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me”


8.      Did Esau accept Jacob’s gift? (Gen. 33:8-11)

Ans: Since he urged him strongly, Esau accepted it.


9.      What does Esau suggest for the continued journey? (Gen. 33: 12)                                 

Ans:  “…I will go before thee”.


10.   What excuse does Jacob make for not traveling with Esau? (Gen. 33:14)                     

Ans:  The children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me.


11.  Who prayed to whom, “am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and; …..” (Gen.33: 9, 10)                                        

Ans:  Jacob prayed God.


12.  Where does Esau return to? (Gen. 33: 16)  

Ans:  Back to Seir.



13.  Where did Jacob buy land and settle instead of following Esau to Seir? (17-19).


Ans:  Succoth.


14.  What is the meaning of “Sukkoth”/ “Succoth” (Gen. 33:17)


Ans:  “shelter”


15.  What did Jacob do when he arrived at Shechem in the land of Canaan? (Gen.33:18-20).


Ans:  He set up an altar there and called it “El Elohe”.



16.  What did Jacob name the alter he erected? (Gen. 33:20) 

Ans:  El-elohe-Israel.



17.  What does the name ‘El Elohe Israel mean? 

Ans:  “Mighty is the God of Israel”
