Ans: “…. Esau would someday break the yoke that bound him to serve Jacob”(Gen. 27:36-40).
14. Esau complained that “he took my birthright,
and now he’s taken my blessing!” (Gen. 27:36).
What is the difference between a blessing and a birthright?
Ans: In “A birthright was an honor given to the firstborn, bestowing “head of household” status and the right to inherit his father’s estate. The son with the birthright would receive a double portion of whatever was passed down” (see Deut. 21:17). The birthright belonged to the firstborn son, where as anyone could receive a blessing. In Gen. 49, Jacob gave blessings to each of his 12 sons.
15. Why did Jacob travel to Haran and
live with his uncle Laban?
Ans: Esau was the elder and Jacob was the young son of Isaac, and the elder deserved first blessings, but their father Isaac blessed the younger Jacob and made him heir. The angry and furious Esau wanted to take revenge and decided to kill Jacob after Isaac died. (Gen. 27:41-44). So Jacob ran away to his uncle Laban at Haran.
16. Esau and Jacob are twins, but two are very
different in many ways. Give few issues.
Ans: In the womb itself the children struggled together within her womb (Gen.25:25-26). Esau was a man of the woods, and fond of hunting; and he was rough, and covered with hair. Even as a boy he was fond of hunting with his bow and arrow. Jacob was quiet and thoughtful, staying at home, and caring for the flocks of his father. Regarding the birthright “Esau despised his birthright.”, whereas Jacob appreciated sacred things. Both fought for the blessing. The fighting started in the womb and the same continued throughout. Esau represents the natural man (1 Cor. 2:13-14 8). Esau - lives for self. However, the older (Esau) will serve the younger (Jacob).
17. Mention the first sibling rivalries in the
Genesis.
Ans: Abel and Cain: The first sibling rivalry started between Abel and Cain and the same resulted in dire consequences, the death to Abel (Gen. 4: 4-9).
18. Mention the second sibling rivalries in the Genesis.
Ans: Esau and Jacob: The second case of sibling rivalry was vividly portrayed by Esau and Jacob in their tussle for the blessing. When Esau heard that Jacob had deceitfully taken his blessing, he burst out bitterly. He held a grudge against Jacob and planned to kill him (Gen. 27:8-10, 14-17)
19. Mention the third sibling rivalries
in the Genesis.
Ans: Joseph and his brothers: Joseph's brothers were jealous of him and would not speak a kind word to him. They called him a dreamer, plotted to kill him, sold him in spite of his pleading, referred to him as "your (Jacob's) son" (Gen. 37:19,26-28,31-32) instead of "our brother." They had no real love towards their own younger brother Joseph.
20. In the New Testament what Jesus told
about the Patriarchs? (Lk. 13:28) .
