12 THE
CALL OF ABRAM
1.What Lord said to Abram? (Gen. 12:1)
Ans: The
LORD had said to Abram, “(1) Leave your country, (2) Leave people (3) Leave your father's household and (4) Go to the land I will show you” (12:1).
2.What promise did the Lord make to Abram? (Gen. 12:1-3, 7)
Ans: (1) "I
will make you into a great nation (2) I will bless you; (3) I will
make your name great,
and (4) you will be a blessing. (5)
I will bless those who bless you, and (6) whoever curses you I will
curse; and (7) all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." (12:1-2)
3.What is the dispensation of Promise?
Ans: This dispensation begins with the
call of Abraham
(Gen. 12). It is called the dispensation of “Promise” because of
the covenant made with Abraham, who lived in the “land of
promise” (Hebrews 6:13; 11:9). Unconditional promises, both physical and spiritual, were
made to Abraham and his descendants Isaac and Jacob (Genesis
12:1-3; 15:4-21; 17:1-8; 22:15-19). The stewards are: the patriarchs Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob and this covers a Period of about 430
years. The same starts from the call of Abraham to Israel’s
arrival at Mt. Sinai.
4.What you know about Abrahamic Covenant? (12:1-3, 6-7; 13:14-17; 17:1-14; 22:15-18).
Ans: In this covenant, God
promised that He would make Abraham’s name great (12:2), and He said unto him: 'I am the
LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to
inherit it (15: 18- 21). Abraham would have numerous
physical descendants (Genesis 13:16).
He would be the father of a multitude of nations (Genesis
17:4-5). God also made promises regarding a nation called
Israel. (12:7; 13:14-15, 15:18-21) All
the families of the world will be blessed through the physical line of Abraham
(12:3; 22:18). N.B. This is a reference to the Messiah, who would come
from the line of Abraham.
5. How old was Abram when he set out from Haran? (b) How long he lived?
Ans: Abram was 75 years old (12: 4) (b) Ans: 175 years.6. When Abram left Haran, who and what all Abram took with him?
Ans: He
took his wife Sarai, his
nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they
set out for the land of Canaan, and
they arrived there (12:5).
7.From Haran, where they reached? Who were there? Who are the Canaanite?
Ans: They
reached into the Land of Canaan. The land named after Canaan, the son of Ham
and his descendants, the Canaanites settled in this place (15:18-21)
8.Who appeared to Abram and what He told to him? (12:7).
Ans: The LORD appeared to Abram and said,
"To your offspring I will give this
land."
9.Where Abram did built the first altar to the Lord?
Ans: At
Bethel, he built an altar unto the
LORD and called upon the name of the LORD (12:8).
10. What is the meaning of Bethel?
Ans: Bethel means “House of God”
11. Why Abram went down to Egypt?
Ans:
“Now there was a famine in
the land, and Abram went
down into Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe” (Gen.12:10).
12. As he was about to enter Egypt, what lie does Abram ask Sarai, to tell?
Ans: “As he
was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "I know what a
beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you … Say you are my
sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be
spared because of you." (12:11
- 13).
13. Who took a liking to Sarai?
Ans: Pharaoh “And when Pharaoh's
officials saw Sarai, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into
Pharaoh’s palace”
(12:15)
14. How did the Pharaoh treat Abram because of Sarai?
Ans: He treated Abram well for
her sake.
(b) What
5 things does Pharaoh give to Abram?
Ans:
Abram acquired sheep and
cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels (12:16).
15 What did the Lord do to Pharaoh and his house because of Sarai? (Gen. 12:17)
Ans:
“The LORD inflicted serious
diseases on Pharaoh and his household …..”
16. How was Abraham and Sarah related before marriage? (Gen. 20: 12).
Ans: They were half brother
and sister. (His half-sister by a different
mother). Later Abraham married
Sarah (Ref. Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter
of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.
17. How God protected Sarah?
Ans: By sending “great
plagues” on Pharaoh and his house (Gen.12:17).
18. What does Pharaoh tell Abram to do once he learned that Sarai is Abram’s wife?
Ans: So Pharaoh summoned
Abram. “What have you done to me?” he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she
was your wife? Why did you say,
‘She is my sister,’ so
that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!” (12:18, 19).
19. Finally, How Pharaoh treated Abram and his people?(12:20)
Ans: Pharaoh
expelled Abram from Egypt. “Then Pharaoh gave orders about
Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he
had’.
20. Please mention, what lesson we get from this chapter?
Ans: Let us remember that God
repeatedly warned people not to seek security and prosperity by going down to
Egypt]. “Going to Egypt” is always a
metaphor for adopting worldly way.
Abraham went where God had not asked him to go and, fearing the
consequences, misled the Egyptians. In so doing, he ruined his testimony before
a pagan royal court and caused those people to suffer.
