GENESIS 17                                                


            ABRAHAM’S NEW REVELATION

1.At what age of Abram God appeared to him (5th time) and changed his name?
Ans:  At his 99 years.

2.This time what the Lord told him? (Gen. 17:1).
Ans:  “I am God Almighty [El-Shaddai]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.”

3.Give the references of four earlier occasions, when God had spoken to Abram:
Ans:
(a)    Gen.  12:1-3 – “Go from your country…”
   (b) Gen.  12:7 –      “To your descendants I will give this land ……”
  (c) Gen.  13:14-17 – “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place …”
  (d) Gen.  15:1-21 – “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you …”

4.What Names has God used for Himself in Genesis?
Ans:
(a)Elohim – Gen. 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth …” [plural of ‘El’]
   (b)Yahweh (‘Adoni’ by the Jews) –Gen.  2:4 “The LORD God made…”
   (c)God Most High - Gen. 14:19 “Blessed be Abram of the Most High God…”
   (d)Jehovah – 15:1-2 “…the word of the LORD came to Abram…
   (e)Lord – 15:2 “and Abram said, Lord {Adoni - Master} God, what wilt thou give me, since I am childless…?”
   (f)Angel of the LORD [Yahweh - Jehovah] - 16:11 “The angel of the LORD said to her…” 16:13 “Thou God seest me” but Hagar is using El, ‘the mighty one’ for the name of ‘God’
   (g) El Shaddai – Almighty God (Gen. 17:1)
   (h)Jehovah-Jireh – the LORD who will provide (Gen. 22:14).

5.What change was made in Abram’s name? (17:4, 5).
Ans:   His name was changed from Abram to Abraham.

6.What is the meaning of his name (1) Abram?  &  (2)  Abraham  (17:4,5)
Ans:  (1) Abram means “exalted father”. (2) Abraham means “father of many” or "father of a multitude"?

                 7.How long did God say the Canaan land would belong to Abraham’s descendants?                         (Gen. 17: 7, 8)                                                                                                    
                     Ans:     God said,    "....I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land                               wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession, and I                      will be their God"

8.What shall be sign of the Abrahamic covenant?
Ans:  Every man child shall be circumcised (17: 9-14)

9.When should a Jewish child be circumcised?  (Gen. 17:12)

Ans:  On the 8th day.

10. What change was made in Sarai’s name?  (17:15)
Ans:  Her name was changed from Sarai to Sarah.

11.  What is the meaning of her name Sarah? (17:16)
Ans:  “A mother of nations”; “princes” (17:15).

12.  What promise (covenant) did God make regarding Sarah? (17:15-16)
Ans:  Blessings to her and her offspring – Isaac. “I will bless her …she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

13.    Name the father and son, circumcised on the same day? (Gen. 17:26)

Ans: Abraham and Ishmael.


14. At what age Abraham was circumcised?  (17:24)
Ans:  Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised.

15.  At what age his son Ishmael was circumcised?

Ans:  His son Ishmael was circumcised at his 13 years (17:24-26).
