WHAT IS THE BIBLE?

Ev. Abraham, Delivering the Message: Jesus is coming soon. Be Ready and Make Others Ready!

Introduction:

The Holy Bible, the Word of God, is the revelation of God Himself to humanity, His special, supernatural gift to His people and is unique in its nature. However, it is one of the oldest books in the world, yet it is the most modern among all books that exist.  This is the divinely inspired and infallible revelation of God to man. This Book of God is powerful and the Bible itself speaks to every age group, to every society, and to every individual of all the ages. Great men of history were regular readers and students of the Word of God and they gained ideas and knowledge from the scripture. This God’s word to the whole human race of all the ages had turned the life of countless men and women - sinners to saint!

God is all powerful, and yet He conveys His message to men through chosen people and was inspired by Holy Spirit. Over the centuries, approximately forty inspired men and women – representing various backgrounds, occupations, and writing styles- served as channels for completing the Word of God.  Though various writers wrote the Bible at various times, in various languages, from various places, the completed work displays a marvelous historical, theological, geographical, topical and biographical unity. Its original text was communicated in just three languages. The Old Testament was written for the most part in Hebrew, with a small percentage in Aramaic. The New Testament was written in Koine Greek.

Why the Bible is so important?

Because it is the Maker’s Manual and “God breathed it”. No other text has had so great influence on man! This book alone answers ageless issues and very important questions, like:

Who is God?
Can I know God?
How can I know the Creator?
Who am I?
Where did I come from?
Where am I going?
Why am I here?
What is my purpose?
How did sin enter the world?
How to overcome the temptations?
How can I fulfill God’s will?
How to enter into the kingdom of God?
What is after death?
What is resurrection of the dead?
What is the rapture?
What is His glorious coming?
What is judgment of God?
What is heaven and hell?
How can I live a rewarding, fulfilling life?

The validity of the Word  of God.

Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself declared the validity of the Word, and put His stamp of approval upon them as “the holy Scriptures,” “the holy writings” and thus affirming that they are completely trustworthy.

1.   “It is written; man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”  - Matthew. 4: 4.

2.   “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one title shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled”-  Matthew.  5:18.

3.   “Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not ….”
-  Mark. 13:31.

4.   “Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it”   -  Luke. 11:28.

5.   “It is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one title of the law.” -  Luke. 16: 17.

6.   “These are the words which I spake unto you,
while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled,
which were written in the Law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.”    -  Luke. 24: 44.

7. “Search the scriptures;  for in them ye think ye have eternal life:John. 5: 39.

8.   “…. , and the scripture cannot be broken”  -  John. 10:35

9.   “For I testify …..  If any man shall add unto these things,God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of  the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.  -  Rev. 22:18-19.

Please Note:

Our Lord began His ministry by quoting from the Old Testament. Compare Matthew. 4:4, 7, 10 with Deuteronomy. 8:3; 6:13, 16  and  He also ended His ministry by quoting from Old Testament.  of His last seven statements on the cross were lifted from the pages of the Old Testament. (Is. 53:10, 11;  12; Psl. 22:1;69:21; 31:5).

WHAT THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT ITSELF

II. What the Bible Say About Itself

1.         The Bible, of course, strongly claims that its writings are from God.                                                Given below are a few texts from the Scripture.

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein:  for the time is at hand.”- Revelation. 1: 3.

2. King David said:

“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul:the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple” - Psl 19: 7.

“Thy words have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”- Psl. 119: 11.

“For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven”-  Psl. 119: 89.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path"- Psl. 119: 105.

“…who …. meditates over this book …..be like a tree planted by the side of a river…whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” - Psl.  1:3.

3. King Solomon concluded:

“Fear God,  keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man”-Eccl. 12:13.

“Who despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded” - Pro. 13: 13.

4. Joshua insisted Israelites:

“Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the Law of Moses, that ye turn not aside there from to the right hand or to the left” - Jos. 23: 6.

                                                  5. Samuel claimed:

“The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, his word was in my tongue”                                                                                                                                               - 2 Sam. 23: 2.

                                                  6. St. Paul’s testimony:

               (Ref.1 Cor. 2:4,13;15:3;  1Thess. 2:13; 4:15) He called this Book “The Holy Scripture” - Rom.1: 2.

“The ‘Sacred writings”- 2Tim.3:15,“The Oracles of God” -Rom. 3 : 2.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed  rightly dividing the word of truth. - 2 Tim. 2:15.

"Hold fast the form of sound words, which  thou hast heard of me,in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus” - 2 Tim. 1:13.

“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets” -  Heb 1:1.

7. St. Peter’s testimony

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy  men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” - 2 Pet. 1:21.

“That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before  by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour”                                                                                                    - 2 Pet. 3:2

The Divine Authority of the Scripture is evident from the phrase used in it
“Thus saith the Lord” or  “The Word of the Lord came to me”.
